Gravel Calculator

A gravel calculator is a useful tool for determining how much gravel you need for your project. It allows you to calculate the volume of gravel required and estimate the cost of your gravel order.

How Much Gravel Do I Need?

When planning the materials needed to lay a driveway, you need to budget for the right amount of gravel. Use our gravel driveway calculator to avoid over-ordering and overspending.

The amount of gravel required is determined by how wide, long and deep your new surface is. This handy gravel calculator is ideal for calculating gravel amounts for patios, pathways, driveways — and even flowerbeds.

Calculate the Required Amount of Gravel

You’ll need to input some data for the gravel calculator to tell you the exact quantity of stone required. Follow these simple steps to receive an accurate quote:

  1. Measure the length and width of each area in metres.

  2. Determine the average depth of stone.

  3. Choose your preferred gravel size.

  4. Use this gravel calculator to get exact quantities of stone.

Whether you’re looking for a gravel driveway calculator or a gravel path calculator, this tool will take into account whatever area you’re looking to cover.

Avoid Thin Patches Using Gravel Grids

Gravel grids add structural support to help avoid loose stones, prevent gravel migration and stabilise the surface. They also help reduce the need for constant maintenance of grading and levelling of the surface of the gravel as the gravel shifts. Driveway gravel grids are also robust enough to withstand vehicle weight.

You typically need between 15kg-20kg of 10-30mm gravel per IBRAN-X gravel grid. This is roughly one bulk bag of stone for every 10m2 based on a depth of 50mm.

You can see the ratios broken down simply below:

  • 5m2 = 4 gravel grids = 60-80kg gravel

  • 10m2 = 8 gravel grids = 120-160kg gravel

Size Density
10mm Gravel 1478kg/m3
20mm Gravel 1560kg/m3
30mm Gravel 1700kg/m3
40mm Gravel 1700kg/m3

FAQs

  • Do gravel grids reduce the amount of gravel I need?

Yes, gravel grids will reduce the amount of gravel required by limiting gravel loss and reducing migration and the necessary depth.

  • How do I calculate the total cost of gravel and grids for my project?

Use our “amount of gravel” calculator to easily work out how much gravel and how many grids you’ll require.

  • Will using a gravel grid reduce long-term maintenance?

Yes, a gravel grid reduces the amount of maintenance needed on your patio or driveway. They help prevent gravel movement, reduce risks of flooding through proper drainage and can reduce rutting or erosion. You can expect your new plastic gravel grids to last over 25 years with minimal maintenance.

  • How do gravel grids prevent thin patches and ruts?

Gravel grids help reduce thin patches by even distributing gravel. They also stabilise the surface, holding the gravel in place to minimise gravel loss and prevent rutting.

  • Will I need to top up gravel regularly with a gravel grid?

Gravel grids help retain gravel by keeping it in place. Minimal loss means you won’t have to top up your gravel regularly.
